Poetry Book

Printing books is one of our specialties and Terry Burns’ recent project “Twelve Days: A Bestiary was one of the most interesting projects we have done. In addition to printing the book, we worked on both the design and layout.

The book includes twelve poems and matching illustrations that were scanned from the original 14” x 20” watercolour paintings. The challenge is maintaining colour accuracy with the originals and keeping the fine detail in the drawings. The finished book has 32-pages, an illustrated cover and a 8.5” x 11” page size.

The illustrations are a perfect complement to the poems that are full of description – fanciful figures dance across pages, animals and birds play principal roles in moralistic tales.

This is how the author describes her book.

“Inspired by The Twelve Days of Christmas, Terry Burns’ Twelve Days: A Bestiary, is a fanciful exploration of the creatures who populate the beloved Christmas classic. Composed of poems and illustrations, Terry has invented characteristics and histories for the French hens, swimming swans, milking maids, drumming drummers and remaining Twelve Days beasts, and presents them in the medieval literary form called a bestiary. Twelve Days: A Bestiary is a little peek into a world where literary tradition, mythology, folktales, natural history, art, and modern poetic practice intersect.”

Terry is a writer, artist and arts administrator living near Chatsworth, ON. In addition to Twelve Days, she is the author of one book of poetry and has edited another. She was Owen Sound Poet Laureate from 2013-2015 and is currently the artistic director of The Words Aloud Spoken Word & Storytelling Festival in Durham, ON (Nov 2-5, 2017, www.wordsaloud.ca)
